College Application and Essay Preparation
This “Writing great essays to accompany your college applications” class is specially designed to get you in tune with what colleges and universities are looking for in the essay portion of your application.
There is a difference between writing “just an essay” and writing a “great essay”! Great essays will enhance your chances of getting into the college or university of your choice.
You will learn what admissions officers are really are asking for in an essay, how to organize your thoughts, outline your “hot buttons,” and write your document with the confidence you need to be admitted. You will learn how and why you need to tailor your comments to the college applied to. You will present your essay before the class to sharpen your speaking skills! You will also practice writing essays extemporaneously, since knowing how to write is a major portion of your college experience! Essays will be evaluated and you will learn firsthand how to edit and create a superior document. You will gain self confidence, understand yourself better, and present yourself in a positive way!
Creative Writing --- writing for “all” occasions!
This overview class takes you from basic writing skills through writing for all occasions. Writing is a skill. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll be able to write simple class notes to technical documents and resumes. You will learn how to write extemporaneously, humorously, under timed conditions and to write a variety of documents including thank you notes, resumes, cover letters, poetry, speeches, screen plays and letters for all occasions.
Reading comprehension and vocabulary building
This class takes reading to the next dimension! You’ll read best sellers like Star Wars, modern screen plays, instructional manuals, poetry and more. You will learn how to remember what you read and build your vocabulary at the same time. You will learn to present verbally what you have read so that you can practice verbalizing and gain confidence in presenting before class.
U.S. History --- an overview, making history meaningful
This class “mirrors” junior high and high school U.S. History classes to help students understand history and what it means to us today. Students will learn the facts, but, at the same time, uncover the “feelings of the times” and relive how the facts affected the people that made history. This class is designed to prepare junior high and high school students to appreciate history and act as a precursor, basis and supplement for U.S. History classes taught today.
